Hot Chocolate Geocaching! A Mac Kid Event!

Join MK and Venture Outdoors at Raccoon State Park on October 23!

October 6, 2011

Beaver Valley Macaroni Kid and Venture Outdoors North are setting up a Macaroni Kid Geocache Event--Family Hot Chocolate Geocaching on Sunday, October 23 from 1 - 4 p.m.!

What is geocaching, you ask?  Geocaching (pronounced Jee-o-cashing) is a very fun, very cool family activity that uses a handheld GPS (Global Positioning System) receiver to navigate your group to a series of hidden treasures--in this case, this hidden treasure will be hot chocolate ingredients.

If you'd like to attend, you can check in at any time at Raccoon Creek State Park (a specific location in the Park will be determined soon) between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m., receive a lesson on how to use the GPS unit, then set off to find three caches. (This is a drop-in event--just drop in between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Oct. 23. No pressure!) There will be different courses set up so that everyone has plenty of room, and each course will contain three geocaches. There will also be a course that will be easy for families with young kids and/or strollers--and some will be a little more difficult if you've geocached before or would like a challenge. If you've never geocached before (like me), Venture Outdoors volunteers will be there to teach us.

It will take you about an hour to find everything you need to make some hot chocolate--and then you go back to the start, where Venture Outdoors will have hot water waiting for you.

Venture Outdoors is offering Mac Kid subscribers a special price for this event--$8 for adults and $5 for all kids 18 and under. You can pay by cash or check on the day of the event at Raccoon. We'll need to have an idea of how many people plan to attend so that enough instructors are available to help. So if you're interested, please fill out this form.  I'll send an email to all those interested when we're closer to October 23, to let everyone know where in Raccoon Park to meet.

This is a great, family-friendly activity that everyone can enjoy! I hope you join us! You can learn more about geocaching in this article from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
