Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss!

March 1, 2012

I didn't realize what an absolute genius Dr. Seuss was until my son started learning how to read. The more kids can rhyme, the easier it is for them to decode language and read words, and the more confident they become in their reading ability. (Confession:  I'm bad at math and big on reading. We read A LOT in our house, 'cause numbers confuse me.) We have tons of Dr. Seuss books, and we're back to reading them all the time since my daughter's learning how to read now.

I love these books because the kids think they're silly and fun, and of course they are--but Dr. Seuss (Theodor Seuss Geisel) also used his writing to subtly comment on environmental issues, politics, world events, and society's morals.

Because of that, I think his books can be useful to teach kids certain lessons. Sometimes when my picky eater tells me yet again that he doesn't want to try new foods, I remind him that the character in Green Eggs and Ham insisted he didn't like that meal even though he had never tasted it. That usually earns me an eye roll, but the point is taken.

Right now, Beaver County libraries are holding Dr. Seuss birthday celebrations with stories, activities, and treats, so take a look at the March calendar to see what's happening at your local library. And of course The Lorax is coming to theaters tomorrow, on Dr. Seuss' birthday (convenient, huh?).  I also have an article with Seuss treats in this week's edition.

And don't forget that Disney on Ice is in town through March 4! Here's my review of the show.
