Doc McStuffins

THIS KID IS MY KIND OF DOCTOR!!

By Christine LaGrosse, MK Pittsburgh March 29, 2012
There are some children’s television shows that I LOVE to watch with my kids, others I reluctantly watch and some I downright refuse to watch!  I am always a little skeptical of new programs and try to preview them before my children dive head first into them (I had a bad experience with Little Bear once and have been cautious ever since!!)  I was very excited to get to preview Doc McStuffins which airs on Disney Jr.

The premise of the show is that Doc McStuffins is a Dr. to her stuffed animals and teaches them valuable lessons about going to the doctor, taking care of yourself and other fun but important topics.  I was immediately drawn to this because my daughter has a Kindergarten check-up coming soon and I am trying to prepare her as much as I can for the entire process.  This show definitely helped me explain a little bit about the process.  One of the favorite lessons from the show is that Doctors aren’t just there for you when you’re sick but they are there to keep you well too!

Doc also has a lovable cast of friends to help her too.  I am a big fan of the snowman, Chilly, who is a bit of a hypochondriac!  I think he says what many kids might be thinking and Doc calms him right down with a logical explanation.

Another part of the show that I love is that the Mother of Doc McStuffins is a Doctor and the Father is shown making dinner.  I think that is great for both of my kids to get to see a successful woman and a Dad who knows his way around the kitchen!  It’s done in such an authentic way (which is a challenge when you have a cartoon) that I didn’t event catch it the first time we watched it.  (I’ll never tell how many times my kids have watched it so far for I fear it may reflect poorly on me as a parent!)

This show doesn’t “dumb anything down” for kids but offers them fun songs, good message and cute characters… who could ask for anything more from a cartoon!

Check it out weekdays at 10:00 AM on Disney Jr. or Disney Channel and take a sneak peek at their website for fun games and activities!
