Camping Is Fun!

At least, that's what I've been told

August 2, 2012
Go camping, they said. It'll be fun, they said. Ugh, I said.

Well, we went camping. And you know what? It was fun. Really.

I didn't just go off and camp, though. I had conditions:
1.  Clean bathrooms and showers
2.  Not too far away
3.  Didn't want to be there for too long. We were staying in a tent, after all.
4.  Lots of things to do for the kids

After way too much research, we settled on a nice-looking camp near Grove City with a pool, mini golf, and lots of other things to keep us busy. Otherwise, I was worried that we would just end up sitting around a campfire, looking at each other while the kids told us how bored they were.

The only thing we hadn't thought about was that we'd be totally by ourselves, at a huge tent site, because we didn't stay on a weekend. So while there were plenty of RVs and cabins around, no one was near us! But it gave the kids plenty of room to ride their bikes and explore (with me yelling, Don't explore too much! There may be poison ivy!!) while my husband set up the campfire and we got the tent ready.

It was a very nice night, luckily, because the battery died in the van (yes, again, I realize we need to just get a new one) with the windows down. We covered up those big gaping spaces with garbage bags and realized that we were worried about different things--rain in the middle of the night (his worry) and raccoons jumping through our windows and eating the food in the van (mine). And when I woke up in the middle of the night and realized that a skunk was nearby, well, that was a new thing to obsess over.

But it all worked out! No raccoons, no bears, the skunk moved along to bother someone else, and a camp employee cheerfully charged our battery in the morning. It was great family time, and we'd like to go again. We were able to sit around the campfire, talk, and enjoy sleeping in a tent. Maybe we'll try a cabin next time, though.
