Teacher Appreciation
Last week my great uncle, a very popular music teacher in the South Hills, passed away. He retired in the 1980s and so hadn't taught high school for nearly the last 30 years. But his former students, many now in their 60s, remembered him fondly and made plans to sing at his funeral. He directed them as teenagers, and they didn't have aspirations to become musicians, or music teachers, or choir directors. They just enjoyed singing. And today they're coming from all over Western Pennsylvania to sing for him, one last time.
When you think of it, there aren't too many people who inspire kids the way that teachers do. Think of a teacher--any teacher--who's brought out the best in you. Now, think of the teachers who are doing the same for your children every day. You know the days (but only the days that end in a "y") when you think you're going to go crazy because the kids are driving you nuts? Now imagine teachers with 20 or more kids in a class! The next time you see a teacher, tell them thanks for everything that they do. They are very much responsible for the kind of person your child will grow up to be.

What is his name? My hubby grew up in Mt Lebanon and has a very musical family.
Thanks,
Sharon

Kudos to him...and you for recognizing teachers! I myself am not a teacher, but a school nurse. My mom was a teacher and now working with teachers I will defend them always for what they do and what they have to endure!

Sharon, his name was Regis Shalley and he taught at Baldwin. (I didn't even know his first name until I was older, I always just called him Uncle Bud.)
Kristine, my parents are both teachers, and even though they've mostly taught college level, I can't imagine doing what they do!
Have your say
