Hot Chocolate Fun

January 9, 2014
Well, wasn't that a fun few days? I've never been so grateful to have a furnace. Did you try the boiling water trick or freeze colored water in balloons to make marbles? I'll confess that I didn't try them, but enjoyed listening to everyone else talk about it!

I prefer things that you can do inside the house--where it's warm. A few weeks ago, we went caroling with some of our neighbors and then had a hot chocolate bar at the house. It was a really easy activity to prepare. I took out the sprinkles we use to decorate cookies, then bought marshmallows, tiny Nestle chocolate chips, whipped cream, M & Ms, crushed candy canes, a big container of hot chocolate mix, and some chocolate syrup. Everyone got a Styrofoam cup, and I put some warm water in each, then told the kids to spoon in the mix and make their own hot chocolate.

I also took some candy chocolate, melted it in the microwave, dipped plastic forks in the chocolate mixture, covered them with sprinkles and candies, and put them on parchment paper. When the chocolate hardened, the spoons lifted right off the parchment, and into the hot chocolate they went!

A quick reminder: The Beaver County libraries are starting up their winter story times and winter actvities, so take a look at the calendar to see what's going on!
