Duane Hardek (who’s my husband, so yes, he gets the full Beaver Valley Macaroni Kid seal of approval!) is a Professional Tennis Registry, or PTR, certified 10 and under instructor. (He’s listed on the PTR website, too.) He teaches group clinics at the Brady’s Run indoor tennis facility on the weekends and also gives private lessons.
Lessons are $30 for an hour, plus a reduced rate of $12/hour per student (down from the regular rate of $22/hour) in court fees that are payable to the Beaver County Recreational Facility at Brady’s Run, where the lessons are held. If you have two kids who are 10 and under, he can split the hour between the two of them—that includes siblings or friends.
Why 10 and Under?
Just as other kids’ sports like baseball, soccer, and basketball use smaller playing areas and equipment, so does 10 and under tennis. The courts are smaller, the racquets are kid-sized, and the balls bounce lower. This way, kids can be successful at tennis right away. Tennis is a great indoor sport and helps to keep kids active during the colder months.
Keeping younger kids’ attention spans and need for engaging activity in mind, lessons are a mixture of activities including games, drills, and strokes that are used to develop core skills for tennis. Coach Duane also uses age-appropriate equipment to help kids understand scoring, rules, etiquette, game play, and general skills.
Benefits of Tennis
While many sports that kids play are in group settings, tennis is more of an individual sport that focuses on both physical and mental stamina. Now while that may seem like a tall order for an 8-year-old, 10 and under tennis is all about building up kids through the sport. They gain confidence (which I’ve seen in my own kids), physical ability, and become skilled at interacting with others, and learn to play as a team.
Should Your Child Try Tennis?
