Why Is Play So Important?

Little Learners Preschool Academy encourages play at every level

By Sharon Scott, Little Learners Preschool Academy in Center Township January 29, 2015
Did you ever watch a child build a tower of blocks? They build it up over and over and squeal with delight when it falls down. They play with complete concentration and determination, building a little higher each time. Did you know that every time a child “plays” like this, he is developing skills that will help him in math? He is also developing physical skills like balance. If he is playing with a partner, social skills and language skills are increasing. For young children, there is no distinction between learning and play.

At Little Learners Preschool Academy, we encourage learning through play at every level. We take advantage of the natural curiosity and desire to play that each child has to teach learning concepts in all areas: physical, social, emotional and cognitive.

How can you promote healthy, valuable PLAY?
  • Provide a safe area for children to play.
  • Focus on the learning that happens during play. Use that learning to interact with your child.
  • Provide play materials that encourage talking, imagining, experimenting, reading, being messy, exploring, and listening.
  • Play should happen indoors and outdoors, as weather permits.
When children have this kind of support from parents and teachers, they gain confidence, self- esteem, learn to problem solve, expand language skills, and so much more.

Valuable play touches every part of a child’s development. At Little Learners Preschool Academy, a preschool and daycare in Center Township, we foster valuable play every day with every child.
