How To Train Your Dragon Live Spectacular!

A review of this must-see show!

August 23, 2012
My family and I attended opening night of DreamWorks Animation's How to Train Your Dragon Live Spectacular, and was it ever spectacular!

Your kids probably know the story of Hiccup and Toothless, but no one's ever seen it like this! It features 23 dragons that look and move just like dragons! They breathe fire and smoke, have a wingspan of up 40 forty feet, and some are even 50 feet long! They're so lifelike--I couldn't get over it.

When these dragons move around on stage, and you see and feel the heat of the battles with the actors, it's like you've been transported to another place. It's just so cool.

I wondered how they would recreate the movie's background and setting. It was done by setting up a back wall that's the size of NINE movie screen and then projecting the background on this wall. It's ingenious and, by using harnesses on the actors, allows the characters to crawl up the side of the wall to enter the action. You really have to see it to believe it!

How to Train Your Dragon Live Spectacular tells the story from the mega-hit 2010 movie. Hiccup is the inventive son of a Viking leader Stoick. Their village is besieged by huge, fire-breathing dragons that attack them repeatedly. Hiccup is clumsy and causes trouble every time he tries to fight a dragon, but he wants to impress Astrid, a Viking his age who's already a fierce warrior. One day, Hiccup happens to catch the most dangerous of dragons, and they become friends. Hiccup and his dragon Toothless must band together to save both the dragons and the village.

It is AMAZING to see how life-like the dragons are and how natural it was to watch Hiccup, a live actor, interact with Toothless and then fly on this back. I've never seen anything like it! My whole family thought that it was a fantastic show!

You may be wondering if the show is scary for younger kids, because the dragons look real and there are pyrotechnics that cause huge plumes of fire and heat to shoot in the air. I think that if parents have concerns, they have the option to sit in one of the upper sections at the Consol. That way, everyone can see the action on stage, but they're not on top of it. It really is a good show for the whole family, and it was so much fun to see something new and different!
